Many ethnic minorities live in and around Sapa. Excluding the Kinh people or ethnic Vietnamese, 6 different ethnic minority groups are found in Sapa; H'Mong 51,65%, Dao 23,04%, Vietnamese 17,91%, Tay 4,74%, Giay 1,36%, Xa Pho 1,06%.  Around 20,000 people live in Sapa town, the remainder are peasant farmers distributed unevenly throughout the district.
